The Issues

SOUTHWARK MIND SAYS:

First we are extremely concerned that despite statutory obligations under the 1990 NHS & Community Care Act there has been no user involvement of any kind in the decision to close this invaluable service.

Since Amardeep has been closed there has been:

  1. No designated safe space for the users of the Asian communities to meet.
  2. Nowhere for Asian users to hold cultural activities & festivals.
  3. No Amardeep staff at the Effra Centre leaving Asian users without key workers.
  4. No Effra centre staff with specific responsibilities for Amardeep users.
  5. No one to communicate with Amardeep users in their first language and no access to interpreters.
  6. No interpreted information e.g. noties about advice and outings in users' first language.
  7. No way for Amardeep users to relate to the other workers due to lack of linguistic skills and cultural knowledge.
  8. Nowhere for users to sit due to high numbers attending which means users have to sit in the foyer.
  9. No free refreshments.
  10. No halal or proper vegetarian food.
  11. No cultural activities eg carrom games, 'sangheet' music group.
  12. No Indian papers.

This is directly opposite to the recommendation of the "Delivering Race Equality: A framework For Action" This document recommends that any service that is developed needs to be "appropriate, sensitive and responsive". In Amardeep's case they are failing to meet this recommendation. There is nothing appropriate or sensitive about closing the project down and the services that Lambeth has put in place does not meet the needs of the South Asian mental health service Users.
